KIRBC Notes, November 30, 2010

On November 30th, the lovely Ashleigh Gardner opened her doors to the book loving hordes for our annual Holiday Edition. This time we celebrated with our biggest group to date (22 people), loads of holiday treats, mulled wine, and a version of the present game that might as well have been called “Just steal whatever Jen has.”

We also managed to talk about books, with each person given 140 seconds by timekeeper Erin Balser (who now had a good reason for yelling regularly). Here’s what everyone crammed into their commercial-length presentations:

JK — Motorcycles & Sweetgrass, by Drew Hayden Taylor

Warm, funny retelling of the Nanabush legend
A little big of magic, a lot of hi-jinks and some vengeful raccoons
JK’s Advent Book Blog recommendation!

Emily — Plainsong, Kent Haruf

Weaving together the stories of a small town outside Denver, Colorado
Crusty old bachelor brothers — favourite characters
Descriptive passages, sparse but meaningful
Description of cattle branding spot on — cure for country town nostalgia
Recommendation from her smart mom.

Loretta — The Emperor of All Maladies, by Siddharta Mukherjee

“It’s a cancer book, and I’m not into cancer”
One of the best books she’s ever read
History of the war of cancer, enough stories to make a great narrative
Loretta had a little “cry on [...]

Books in 140 Seconds: Let the Great World Spin

Welcome back to your regularly scheduled edition of Books in 140 Seconds, one-take book club blitz straight from my kitchen. A couple weeks ago, Erin and I ran the Giller gauntlet, postponing our regular  videos to talk about all of the Giller nominated titles and even trying to predict the winner. (We didn’t, but then, who did?) Now we’re back on track. This week, Erin and I are chatting about Colum McCann’s Let the Great World Spin:

If you’d like to read along, next week we’re chatting about Kate Torgovnick’s Cheer!: Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders (or, you could prepare by watching Hellcats, but er, I’d recommend the book.)

Books in 140 Seconds: Sister Wife

It’s Thursday, it’s 1:40, and no doubt you’ve saved a special 140 seconds out of your busy day for the latest edition of the frantic phenomenon that is Books in 140 Seconds. Two weeks ago, Erin Balser and I sung the praises of Emily Schultz’s Heaven Is Small, and this week we’re going with another KIRBC-recommended pick, Shelley Hrdlitschka’s Sister Wife. Not only was this book a KIRBC pick, it’s also one that stirred up strong interest from many in the group (I may have yelled “It’s Big Love in a book!” louder, and more frequently than I would have liked.) Here’s what Erin and I thought of this YA novel:

One garbled name out of 15 videos isn’t bad, right? (We’re really sorry, Shelley.)

And for your entertainment, and a nice contrast to Sister Wife‘s classy, sensitive treatment of polygamy, here’s a trailer for TLC’s new show, Sister Wives, which debuted last week:
