Books in 140 Seconds: Lemon

Don you headphones and keep an Excel spreadsheet a click away, it’s time for another edition of the Thursday afternoon workday distraction that is Books in 140 Seconds. Last week Erin and I talked about Sloane Crosley’s entertaining essay collection How Did You Get This Number, and this week we’re switching gears from a lighthearted romp through through one woman’s twenties to a darker exploration of the tortured teen years with Cordelia Strube’s Lemon.

In case you’re reading along (which you most definitely should), run to your local bookstore or library and lay your hands on Sarah Selecky’s short story collection This Cake Is For the Party, which we’ll serve up next time on Thurs. Aug 26th.

KIRBC Notes for Aug. 5, 2010

With the spectacular summer weather we’ve been having, I thought it was the perfect time for a KIRBC first: the backyard book club. The gracious Sarah Labrie quickly offered up her personal paradise (complete with pond). And while that would have made this edition of KIRBC notable enough, I wanted to really make it one for the record books by adding another irresistible element: more delicious food. KIRBC has always had some great treats, but I thought we could kick it up a notch by encouraging everyone to bring some excellent edibles. I wasn’t disappointed from the chip buffet to red pepper ricotta tarts to Kelvin’s deadly margaritas, I think it’s safe to say that nary a body left the party unsatisfied (or sober).

To bolster the foodie theme, I also encouraged people to bring a second recommendation that was a cookbook of some kind, so you’ll see some people have two picks in the notes. You might not want to read these while hungry . . .

Tan –  Cry to Heaven, by Ann (No Longer a Christian!) Rice

A pick in honour of Rice jumping off the Christianity bandwagon ’cause that [...]

Books in 140 Seconds: One Bloody Thing After Another

It’s Thursday at 1:40 p.m. which means it’s time for another edition for the fortnightly phenom that is Books in 140 Seconds. Two weeks ago, Erin and I talked Fear of Fighting, which explores the horrors of the breakup, and this week we’re following up with a book that explores horror a little more literally. Join us as we sink our teeth into the too-many-toothed creatures and troubled teens that populate Joey Comeau’s One Bloody Thing After Another:

(Also, as a disclaimer, the expression on my face in this opening still is NOT how I feel about the book. Just about Erin.)

Your next dose of a book club in double time runs on June 3rd at 1:40 p.m. We’re revealing our penchant for selective apocalypses once more as we talk about Evan Munday’s graphic novel Quarter-Life Crisis: Only the Good Die Yung.
