This post makes me feel warm and sunshiny. Thanks so much for sharing this music!

PS - I see you're reading Fauna by Alissa York. I loved it, and our book club had the pleasure of hosting Ms. York for a discussion last year. She's incredibly personable and kind. Hope you enjoy it!

Also, I loved the Sarah Harmer song. It's a bit of country, which I'm not actually partial to, but also a bit of sitting underneath my old Lone Pine on the hill of our ten acres where I grew up, chewing grass and reading novels and listening to birds and letting the sun paint my cheeks.

Jen, you are one lucky girl. That song by your boyfriend was sweet and good. He reminds me a little of Counting Crows, one of my favourite bands.

And hey, doesn't Margaret Atwood have some gardening songs from Year of the Flood? :)

[...] Barnheart by Jenna Woginrich: I love the subtitle of this memoir: “An incurable longing for a farm of one’s own.” And it’s appropriate, too, because despite being a renter and having to work a desk job, Woginrich wants to be a farmer with all of her twenty-something might. It’s lighter farm fare, but by the end of this slim volume you’ll be rooting for her too. By the end you may end up with a little barnheart of your own, which can partially be sated by visiting her blog, Cold Antler Farm. [...]

That bit about her leaving vegetarianism because of her understanding of raising animals for food and such IS interesting! I don't have a farm, but the opposite happened to me. The more time I spent around animals (cows, dogs, etc.) the less I wanted to eat meat. I went vegetarian in 2003, after we got our dog Lucy, and I can't look at animals the same anymore.

I want a farm but I don't want animals for food. Rather, I want them as companions! But I could milk cows and goats and make soap or whatever and shear sheep for wool and have hens for eggs...maybe even a few little pigs, er, for entertainment and cuddling. :)

I'm glad you liked this book. It's been on my wish list for a while and I'm not taking it off!

Jen, I feel your pain! I'm always trying to buy eco-friendly products for my home and body, but I hate feeling like I have to purchase shitty expensive mascara because it's the only environmentally friendly and chemical-free option. These may be first world problems, but it's something that alot of us think about and I'm glad to see I'm not alone in this internal struggle :)

@Gary, thanks for stopping by, and for watching. Glad you enjoyed it!

@Steph, Wes, that little photo-bomber! (Or video-bomber!) Of course he wants to be part of the action. Not surprised you felt the same way we did about the two halves. There were definitely parts that stuck with me from the first half too: the story where the kids run off with the locals and hide out in that cave? Enchanting.

I'm sorry. I had to listen to this twice because the kitten in the background distracted me! Haha! Too cute. There, then gone, then reappears, so I had to just keep watching to see what happened!

I read the Juliet Stories, too, and like you I preferred the second part. Your favourite bits were also mine, though there are parts from the first half that are still with me.

Ladies! This is brilliant. You pack a lot of wit & enthusiasm & evidence of thoughtful reading into 140 (well, maybe a few more) seconds. I'm a VERY big fan of this book, and I think you did it as much justice as could possibly be done in such a short space. After hearing you do this one, I'll tune in again.
Best,

This is AWESOME!! Love it. Great reco, Jen, and there's a few others I'd like to read. A customer gifted me Trish's reco and I do want to read Heti's book, too, though I don't have it yet. My sister loves her.

So great to see so many tweeps there! This is really cool. I love having found this ages ago and seeing it grow. I'll bet, too, that there was great food, knowing Kelvin.

Wow. I was barely able to put this book down for a second after the first few pages got me completely hooked. Suzanne Collins narrative here has an immediacy to it that, when combined with the very dramatic life-or-death plot, is incredibly compelling. It’s entertaining, and incredibly disturbing all at once.

Whoa. Loving the energy, guys! I look forward to this book. It's come so highly recommended. I keep looking at it on my shelf but I'm daunted right now by the size.
I love this: "And that’s what this book, and my garden, and even yoga, have inspired in me: being sensitive, and reconnecting with the natural order. It’s like a seed, long dormant, is starting to unfurl. Like Brett, I’ve realized that I may have thus far overlooked an essential goal: 'attempting to write myself back into the landscape where I live.'”

This made me heave a great sigh at the end, Jen. I hear your love for the farm, for gardening, for life in the country and I echo it so much, it makes me feel the distance (geographically) between us. I too long for such a life, and I too love our gardens. I can't wait to start seeds in March! We do both veggies and flowers.

After your and Erin's tweet about Trauma Farm I moved the book to my night table. It's about time, I think. Thank you.

A well-written post, Jen, a nice combination of the personal and the book review. A pleasure to read.

What a great post! Ms. Knoch, you have a way with words. I swear I felt hypnotized while reading, as if all the talk about slowing things down had actually managed to slow down time.

I'm going to look for this book.

@Steph: Steph, you're so kind. Your support means a lot, especially as the posts become fewer and far between. I'm excited you worked on Juliet! No doubt you made it even better.

@Carrie: Thanks for stopping by! What a pleasure. Hopefully I can send even more people your way.

@Sandra: Thank you for coming by and reading the blog. Since I find my posts dwindling, I'm not accepting many books for review these days, so I think I'll have to pass. But good luck with the new book and I'm glad we met.

Hello! I stumbled on your site and have really enjoyed the reviews and the writing in general. I would love to send you a review copy of my new novel, my debut novel actually: And the Seas Shall Turn to Lemonade, a darkly funny and quirky satire about academia, marriage and communal living. Although this is my first novel, I have two award-winning books of poetry out, and have also published a number of short stories. Let me know if you would like to receive one...and all the best with the site and the blog.

No matter how long between posts, Jen, I'll always read.

I really look forward to both Trauma Farm and The Art of Fielding. I have both, but like many others, they so far just sit on my shelves and I make mooney faces at them. I'd love to read more this year.

I had the privilege of getting to work on The Juliet Stories for Anansi and I can tell you, you're in for some powerful imagery and emotions. It will stick with you.

[...] Natural Order by Brian Francis: I loved Brian’s first book, Fruit, which was fresh and funny, and created a memorable teen protagonist in Peter Paddington, but Natural Order is just what you’d hope a second novel would be: it’s more mature, more ambitious, and an absolute pleasure to read. The language is rich, it’s filled with humour and pathos, but his most notable achievement is in creating Joyce Sparks, a fiesty, often cantankerous old woman reflecting on her life and her relationship with her deceased son. Her son was gay, and it was something Joyce simply couldn’t face. Having such an intolerant protagonist will likely create a striking dissonance in most readers, as you empathize with Joyce while being horrified by her actions at the same time. This is one of the most moving and meaningful explorations I’ve ever read of what it means to be a mother. [...]

I really like that kids' dungeon! It looks anything but, and that painting of Pippi on the floor? Love. :)

Also love seeing Atkinson and Atwood - those editions are awesome. Interesting note on the front of Eymundsson, too, est. 1872?!

Holy crap, that's a ton of book recos! This meeting is getting more popular!

I'm disappointed to hear that Game of Thrones has lots of sex, and that it's the first ingredient on the list, too, because I'm watching the show and seriously, it's porn! Is it possible there can be too much sex? Yes! I'm breasted, fucked, and cocked out. S'cuse my French. I have nothing against sex, or even full frontal nudity, but this is getting ridiculous! C and I are choking on our sour cream and onion chips here and missing monologues because they're happening while there's so much distracting grunting and moaning going on. And one more from behind scene and I'm going to scream. C says this is more like a soap opera than anything else. :( Like the book, there's also lots of gore, and somehow I can stand that better. The acting is superb, as are the costumes and settings, so I want more story, please! I was hoping the book would be different. I'm going to read it anyway, but still.

OKAY. Also, I've been wanting to read Monoceros for a while. And I love Loretta's choice! I have the collection too. Great stuff. Curious about whether Henrietta Lacks book would be good for our store book club...

I would be honored to be the guy next door to your commune who didn't give you advice you didn't want. Really, thanks for reading the book, getting what I was going for and sharing it with your audience.

Steph: I normally wear clashing patterns, so be glad I went with stripes-on-stripes. It's more matchy that way.

Also, be prepared for more stripes in the next video!

Stripes for the win!

Yes, this book was totally like coffee with a friend! For me, it was like coffee with a friend, in the middle of a lake on a cottage long weekend. Great summer read all around. JK, I can see you warming up to Ladies Lit bit by bit! :D

This review could also be titled "Erin Loves Stripes".

Professor Julie is willing to grant you the full 100% because you're reviewing an ARC and are, therefore, early to the party. Just don't let it happen again.

What a touching piece. You made me want to go roll around in the soil like some deranged puppy. It made me realise that a garden is like a poem: you can step in and out of it at different times in your life and it will still teach you something new. I just loved reading about Vito and his gentle encouragement. There is someone very like him right next door to me, so I suppose there are lots of Vitos out there, peeping around corners. We've just got to open our eyes and SEE them :)

I feel the same way, Jen. C and I have flower gardens all over the house, mostly started from seed, which we do every year. We had a veggie garden for two years but the copious rabbits and squirrels and other assorted creatures feasted. We have to make a walled in area, I think.

I've never seen our gardens as fresh and green and colourful and lush as this year. This summer is good. The work has paid off. For our anniversary last year, we made another garden, which we call the anniversary garden. We included a bird bath and planted a rose of sharon in it and surrounded everything with annuals, as we did this year again, grown from seed. Is there anything as exciting as watching sprouts? Or taking a plate out the the veggie patch and loading it with supper?

I understand the joy you feel, and your gardens are looking great.

PS. I love this: “No, no. Too close. You don’t put two babies in one cradle!”
